베트남의 춤 공동체는 다양함을 존중하고 활동적이며 모든 이를 환영한다. 베트남으로 여행을 온 사람들은 하노이의 공원과 공공장소에서 다양한 연령대의 사람들이 무리를 지어 함께 춤을 추는 모습을 쉽게 볼 수 있을 것이다. 하나의 공간에서 살사, 왈츠, 탱고, 힙합 등 다양한 춤이 벌어지고 있으며, 춤을 추는 사람들의 웃음과 땀 역시 우아하게 어우러져 있다. 가벼운 옷차림부터 드레스와 하이힐까지, 어떤 차림새를 하든 환영받는다.

춤을 사랑하는 사람들은 나이트클럽에서 친목을 다지곤 한다. 몇몇 클럽들은 라틴 댄스나 볼룸 댄스 같은 특정한 장르의 음악이나 춤을 선호한다. 현재 하노이와 호치민의 댄스 스튜디오에서는 K팝 커버댄스, 재즈댄스, 어반댄스(urban dance), 힙합댄스, 섹시댄스, 줌바댄스 등이 유행하고 있다. 그에 비해 발레나 현대무용 수업을 제공하는 스튜디오의 수는 적다.

베트남에는 하노이 국립무용아카데미(National Academy of Dance in Hanoi)와 호치민 무용전문학교(Vocational School of Dance in Ho Chi Minh City)라는 두 개의 정부 산하 국립 무용 교육기관이 있다. 국립 무용 교육기관은 학생들에게 전문적이고 학술적인 무용 트레이닝을 제공하고 있다. 트레이닝 프로그램에는 베트남 전통민속춤과 소수민족춤, 고전발레, 모던댄스, 서양민속춤, 현대무용이 포함되어 있다. 베트남의 북부와 중부지방에서는 공연예술전문학교에서 춤을 배울 수 있다.

베트남의 무용 및 음악 공연단체는 대부분 정부 소유이거나 정부에서 재정지원을 받고 있다. 베트남의 64개 성(省)을 통틀어 100개가 넘는 공립공연예술단체가 있고, 이러한 단체들의 30% 이상이 무용 및 음악 관련 단체이다. 각각의 성에는 최대 1~2개 정도의 예술단체가 설립되어 있고, 대도시인 하노이, 하이퐁, 탄호아, 호치민에서는 더 많은 단체를 찾아볼 수 있다. 베트남의 2대 도시인 하노이와 호치민에는 국립오페라발레극장(National Opera and Ballet, 하노이), 베트남무용음악극장(Viet Nam Theatre of Dance and Music, 하노이), 베트남현대예술극장(Viet Nam Contemporary Art Theatre, 하노이), 호치민발레심포니오케스트라오페라극장(Hochiminh city Ballet, Symphony, Orchestra and Opera), 봉센전통무용음악극장(Bong Sen Traditional Dance and Music Theatre) 등이 있다.

해외 교류 단체 중에서는 하노이의 프랑스문화센터인 레스파세(L’espace)와 괴테-인스티투트(Goethe Institute)가 가장 권위 있는 현대무용 단체로 꼽힌다. <유럽과 아시아가 만나는 현대무용 페스티벌(Europe Meets Asia in Contemporary Dance Festival)>은 베트남과 유럽의 공연을 선보이는 연간 행사로 자리 잡았다. 해당 페스티벌은 2018년과 2019년 여름에 현대무용과 타 예술의 경계에 도전하는 워크숍과 퍼포먼스를 선보임으로써 젊은 베트남 예술가들이 협업하는 플랫폼으로 기능하도록 하였다.

크로싱오버 아트페스티벌(Krossing Over Arts Festival)은 프랑스문화센터와 베트남 안무가 세바스챤 리(Sebastien Ly)와 그의 댄스컴퍼니 케르만(Kerman)의 협업으로 시작된 페스티벌이다. 장소 특정적(site-specific)인 즉흥 퍼포먼스와 관객참여를 강조하는 신선한 춤을 선보이며 예술교류를 위한 플랫폼으로 기능하고 있다. 올해로 3년째 개최되었고, 2020년에는 하노이와 호치민에서 개최될 예정이다.

휴 페스티벌(Hue Festival)은 휴 시(市)의 오래된 성채에서 2년마다 개최되는 국제 페스티벌이다. 다른 나라의 다양한 공연예술, 음악, 춤을 선보인다. 다음 페스티벌은 2020년에 개최될 예정이다.

키네지 스튜디오(Kinergie Studio)는 다양한 국제 교류 프로젝트에 참여하는 하노이 기반 댄스 스튜디오다. 해외 안무가들과 함께하는 현대무용 워크숍을 제공한다.

아라베스크 베트남(Arabesque Vietnam)은 베트남에서 가장 활발하고 왕성한 활동을 보여주는 호치민의 사립현대무용단이다. <신발 이야기 Story of the Shoes>, <구두 Moc>, <틱택 Tick Tack>, <안개 The Mist> (룬프로덕션Lune Production 기획 및 마케팅)과 같은 매우 인상적인 창작 공연을 선보여왔다. 단장을 맡은 안무가 응옌 탄 록(Nguyen Tan Loc)은 태양의 서커스(Cirque du Soleil)에서 <토루크, 최초의 비행(Toruk the First Flight)>의 안무를 공동 창작한 바 있다.

베트남의 무용단체와 네트워킹하거나, 댄스 스튜디오에서 워크숍, 댄스잼(dance jam 즉흥 춤 겨루기), 아티스트 토크를 진행하는 것은 어렵지 않다. 댄스 스튜디오로 직접 연락해서 자신을 소개하고 아이디어를 제안하면 된다. 만약 공공장소나 공연장에서 공연과 축제 같은 대규모 프로젝트를 기획하고 싶다면, 허가받은 지역단체와 공식적인 파트너쉽 계약을 체결하거나 허가증을 받아야 한다.

Vietnam dance scene is diverse, lively and welcoming. In the capital city of Hanoi, tourists can easily find groups of people of different ages dancing in the parks and public spaces. Salsa, waltz, tango, hip hop, all can be seen in one place. Smiles and sweats, with grace. T-shirts and shorts, dresses and high heels, all are welcomed.

Dance lovers can also get social in night clubs. Some clubs favour specific music and dancing style for example Latin dance, ballroom dance. K-pop dance cover, jazz dance, urban dance, hip hop dance, sexy dance and zumba are popular among the dance studios in Hanoi and Hochiminh city. A smaller number of studios offer ballet and contemporary dance classes.

There are two government dance schools in Viet Nam, which are the National Academy of Dance in Hanoi and the Vocational school of Dance in Ho Chi Minh city. The national one provides vocational and academic training to students. Training includes Vietnamese folk/ethnic dance, classical ballet, modern dance, western folk dance and contemporary dance. In upper north and middle part of Vietnam, dance training available at performing art vocational schools.

Many music and dance performance organisations are government owned and financed. There are more than 100 performing art public organisations across 64 provinces of the country. Over 30% of these organisations are related to dance and music of various kinds. Each province has at least 01 or 02 organisations, while Ha Noi, Hai Phong, Thanh Hoa and Ho Chi Minh city have more. In the two biggest cities there are the National Opera and Ballet (Hanoi), Viet Nam Theatre of Dance and Music (Hanoi), Viet Nam Contemporary Art Theatre (Hanoi), Hochiminh city Ballet, Symphony, Orchestra and Opera and Bong Sen traditional dance and music theatre.

About international exchange activites, Ha Noi, L’espace (The French Cultural center) and the Goethe Institute are the most prominent promoters for contemporary dance. Europe meets Asia in Contemporary Dance festival was an annual event with performances from Vietnam and Europe. In summer 2018 and 2019, the festival shifted the focus into creating a platform for collaboration among young Vietnamese talents through workshops and performances that challenge the boundaries between contemporary dance and other art forms.

Krossing Over Art Festival, initiated by French - Vietnamese choreographer Sebastien Ly and his company Kerman is a fresh and open dance and art exchange platform based on site-specific improvisation and the participation of the audience. The festival had come to its 3rd edition and will come back to Hanoi and Hochiminh city in 2020.

Hue festival is a bi-annual international festival that takes place in Hue city’s old citadel. Often the festival features all kinds of performance art, music, and dance from different countries. The next festival will be in 2020.

Kinergie Studio based in Ha Noi, participated in various international exchange projects and offers workshops in contemporary dance from international choreographers.

Arabesque Vietnam based in Ho Chi Minh city is the most productive and active private contemporary dance troupe in Vietnam. The team created several impressive shows: "Story of the shoes", "Moc", "Tick tack", "The Mist" (produced and marketed by Lune Production). Choreographer Nguyen Tan Loc, the leader of the group was invited to co-choreographed Cirque du Soleil’s performance “Toruk the first flight”.

It is rather simple to get connected and do workshop, dance jam and artist talk at dance studios. All you need is to contact the studio, introduce yourself and suggest the idea. If you wish to make bigger project like a performance in a public place, in a theatre, or to make a festival, it is necessary to get a permit as well as an official partnership agreement with a licensed local institution.
